The Sandstone Hideaway is built to look like a chunk of eroded desert rock: layered strata, rounded ledges, and a wind-worn surface texture that mimics the sandstone and steppe formations found in arid habitats. The design combines three functions in one piece. A spacious cave at the base offers a shaded, enclosed retreat. Stepped tiers up the side give climbing and clambering terrain. A broad upper shelf doubles as a basking platform or observation spot under a heat lamp placed at a safe distance.
Positioned against a back or side wall, it anchors a desert or steppe diorama and creates depth. Set out in the open, it becomes a freestanding centerpiece with a hide underneath and a summit above. The naturalistic strata blend into sand, slate, and dry-scape substrates, so it settles into the layout rather than standing out as an accessory.
As a naturalistic terrain piece, the profile suits a range of arid and low-to-moderate humidity keepers. 🧱 Material Options
This hide is offered in two versions. Choose the one that matches your enclosure's humidity.
PLA Dry Model (arid terrariums & display)
Printed in PLA, intended for arid and low-humidity desert terrariums, dioramas, tabletop terrain, shelf display, and general home décor. PLA is not recommended for submerged aquarium use, for constantly wet or heavily misted enclosures, or for setups with strong, continuous UV lighting.
PETG Wet Model (humid, misted & heavy-UV setups)
For high-humidity, misted, bioactive, or partially submerged use, and for enclosures running heavy reptile UVA/UVB lighting, this piece is printed in PETG and supplied completely unpainted. CurioPrinta uses PETG for wet and high-UV décor rather than standard PLA because it is more chemically stable and holds up better to prolonged moisture and water exposure.
A note on UV: PETG is more suitable than PLA for continuous exposure to standard reptile UVA/UVB lights, but it is not immune to it. Over long-term, continuous UV exposure the material can gradually become more brittle, so inspect it periodically and replace it if it develops cracks or sharp areas. This is not a claim that PETG is permanently waterproof, indestructible, chemically inert, UV-proof, or universally safe for every animal or water condition.
🛠️ Setup, Use & Care
The same basic handling applies whether you run the Dry or Wet Model. A few extra notes are called out per habitat below.
Before you set it up
• Rinse with clean water and inspect the piece before placing it in an enclosure.
• Avoid soaps, detergents, bleach, solvents, and household cleaners.
• Confirm the cave opening and tier spacing suit your animal's adult size and behavior.
• Position it securely so it cannot shift, tip, trap an animal, or press against the glass.
Terrarium & vivarium notes
• Keep it away from direct contact with high-output heat lamps, heating elements, or other intense heat sources; place basking lamps at a safe distance above the shelf, not against the plastic.
• Check hides and openings against the animal's adult size.
• Inspect regularly for wear, trapped waste, or hard-to-clean areas.
• Species-specific husbandry guidance from a qualified source should take priority over general product suggestions.
Humid, submerged & heavy-UV (PETG Wet Model)
• Rinse thoroughly with clean water before use; no soap or chemicals.
• Position it so it stays put and cannot shift against glass or animals.
• Check it periodically as part of normal maintenance and remove it if it becomes damaged or develops sharp areas.
• Under strong, continuous UV lighting, PETG can slowly grow brittle over time; inspect it periodically and replace it if it cracks.
Cleaning
• Rinse with clean water and use a soft brush when needed.
• Avoid soaps, bleach, solvents, abrasive cleaners, boiling water, dishwashers, and high-temperature cleaning.
• For dry display use, dust with a soft brush or cloth, or a lightly damp cloth when appropriate.
• Let it dry completely before long-term storage.

🌊 Can this be placed underwater?
Only the PETG Wet Model is intended for wet or submerged use. The PLA Dry Model is for dry, arid, and display setups and should not be submerged.
☀️ Which version should I pick if I run heavy UV lighting?
Choose the PETG Wet Model. PETG is more suitable than PLA for continuous reptile UVA/UVB exposure, though even PETG can slowly become brittle under long-term UV, so inspect it periodically and replace it if it cracks.
🎨 Is the humid / submerged version painted?
